How to do Sheetkari Pranayama – The Hissing Breath Technique

The word sheetkari is derived from two words, ‘shee’ referring to the sound of shee and ‘kari’ which loosely translates to ‘which produced.’ As insinuated by the derivation, this pranayama involves the production of a hissing sound resembling the sound of clenched teeth.

Sheetkari is very similar to shitali since the desired objectives in both cases are essentially the same. The core difference between the two is in the process of how the two are practised. Just like shitali, sheetkari causes a cooling effect on the whole body.

In additional to the benefits similar to those of shitali, this pranayama is usually re-energizing making it very ideal for people who tend to regularly feel fatigued or low on energy. It also helps purify the blood which leads to improved health and immune system and is also attributed with helping improve the memory of a person.
