Many do not know when to use Ms. vs. Miss or Mrs and what each indicates. So What’s the difference between Miss, Ms. and Mrs.?
‘Miss’ should be used when referring to an unmarried woman, while “Mrs.” is the proper title for a married woman. Many are often confused about the correct usage of “Ms.”, which does not depend on marital status at all and can be used as a title for both unmarried and married women.
Ms. – So we can say Ms. does not indicate marital status. Ms is used out of courtesy when we do not know the marital status of the woman, or if she prefers the title. Also in some parts of the United States, you only say Ms if the lady is divorced.
Miss – It is used when a woman is unmarried (It is often used in reference to a child, teen, or student).
Mrs. – It is used to indicate that a woman is married (or has been married since she may be a widow or divorced).
